What is spyware?
Spyware is software that installs and operates in your computer without your consent. Spyware activity may stay unnoticed for a long time and do a lot of harm to your privacy. To prevent this threat antispyware programs have been created. Their purpose is to detect and remove spyware.
Some examples of what spyware is used for:
-
Collecting information
Spyware can collect all kinds of information about your computer: your passwords, applications you use, sites you visit, emails you write, and other private data. A kind of malware specifically designed for these purposes is called a keylogger. Keyloggers can record every keystroke and make screenshots at set intervals. If your computer is infected with a keylogger, all your PC activity will be monitored by malicious users.
Spyware that collects information completely compromises privacy and does irreparable damage to the victim. Lost access to email, banking and other accounts, identity thefts, and unauthorized charges made to credit cards are all results of such spyware activity.
-
Getting access to your computer
Backdoors and Remote Access Trojans will open your computer to unauthorized access. Using these spyware tools, someone can remotely copy or delete files on your computer, run or alter programs, upload malware, crash your PC, use your internet connection for any purposes and do other harmful things. Basically, spyware will grant a stranger the same access to your computer as you have.
-
Advertising
Software that shows unsolicited advertisements is called adware. It will download ads to your computer, usually without your knowledge. Adware can display ads in popup windows, change the default homepage of a web browser or redirect the browser to malware sites.
Not all adware is spyware. Some adware is only annoying because it keeps bombarding you with ads, but is otherwise harmless. However other adware secretly monitors users' online activities and preferences, such as what sites they visit the most. Based on that, internet users will be shown targeted ads. Such adware is considered spyware and can be potentially dangerous.
